I was commissioned by Artist Hive to create a light installation for the Enfield Winter Lights Festival. The station building gave me a 38 metre long canvas consisting of 24 windows. Being built in 1933, I decided to take the Art Deco style as my inspiration. I wanted to bring warmth to this iconic heritage building with a sunrise design, complementing Charles Holden’s circular architecture with graduating circles representing planets – the sun and moon. This tied in nicely with a vintage London Underground poster. I used curved stripes to represent train track travelling around the station. Whilst the aim was to create a night-time feel-good spectacular, there was a bonus effect during the day with the sunshine blazing through the windows over the escalators bringing a welcoming vibe to the interior.
